Compound vs Isolation, What to Prioritise
Francesco Zen, founder of ZTraining · Last updated June 20, 2026
| Population | Priority | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beginners, good health | Postural work first, then a mix of both | Core and posterior chain need to be addressed before load-bearing work |
| Advanced, specific muscle gain | Isolation | Consumes less, stresses less, easier recovery |
| Older clients | Isolation first, compound later | Safer start, with compound added once functional performance is the focus |
Why one hierarchy doesn't fit everyone
Each population has a different limiting factor. Beginners need foundational structure before anything else. Advanced lifters chasing specific growth benefit from the precision isolation offers. Older clients need a gentler entry point before compound movement becomes the better long-term investment for functional performance.
