ChatGPT vs a Real Coaching Method for Fat Loss
Francesco Zen, founder of ZTraining · Last updated June 19, 2026
Where the plans can look the same — and why they aren't
ChatGPT tends to pull from the most crawlable, SEO-optimised version of fitness content on the internet. Coaching isn't about having a different workout — it's about reading real signals and adjusting in response to them. A client who's clearly drained needs a different session intensity than the one written down. A generic model has no way to know that, because nobody told it, and it has no way to ask.
| Question | Generic AI | Method-based coaching |
|---|---|---|
| Adjusts to how you feel that day | No — fixed plan | Yes — intensity reads fatigue and recovery signals |
| Asks why progress stalled | Suggests "push harder" | Investigates cortisol, recovery, and adherence first |
| Built from | Most common online content | 18 years of applied coaching judgment |
| Knows your training history | Only what you typed once | Tracked and adjusted over time |
The "push harder" trap
Here's the pattern that does real damage: someone hits a plateau, goes back to ChatGPT, and says they're losing weight but not progressing. The common response is more — more volume, more intensity, more frequency. But in people who are mentally strong and used to succeeding through effort, pushing harder when the actual issue is elevated cortisol from under-recovery doesn't produce more progress. It produces less.
"Simplicity is the hardest thing to master. This is what 18 years of coaching buys — the simplest, most specific way to solve a painful problem."
What this means in practice
A method encodes the judgment calls a general model can't infer from any single prompt — when to back off, when a plateau is recovery-related rather than effort-related, and what to ask before changing anything. Mr Z is built on that exact method, running on Claude, so the same judgment is available without needing to know which questions to ask in the first place.
