What Is the Metabolic Setup Principle?

Francesco Zen, founder of ZTraining · Last updated June 19, 2026

What it actually means

Most fat loss approaches start by changing how much someone eats. The metabolic setup principle starts somewhere else entirely: improving how well the body uses what it's already being given. That means correcting the balance of protein, carbohydrate, and fat, supporting digestion, and stabilising energy through better glycemic control, all before a single calorie is added or removed.

Why this comes first

A body that's digesting and absorbing food efficiently responds differently to everything that comes after it: training, recovery, and eventually a calorie adjustment if one is even needed. Addressing efficiency first means the changes that follow have a stable foundation to work from, instead of being layered onto a system that's already working against itself.

How it's applied

In practice, this means evaluating someone's real requirements, not generic ones, and adjusting their actual nutritional input against what their body is producing as output, over time, rather than applying a fixed formula and hoping it fits.
