Body Recomposition Over 40: How the Approach Changes
Francesco Zen, founder of ZTraining · Last updated June 19, 2026
Why recovery comes first
Past 40, recovery and hormonal efficiency take priority over nutrition on its own. If there are any signs of a hormonal imbalance or deficiency, the first step is bloodwork through a trusted provider, before building the programme any further. Everything else gets designed around what that recovery picture actually shows.
What happens when recovery slips
When recovery is compromised, insulin resistance creeps in, cortisol rises, and efficiency drops fast, often faster than the change in training would suggest it should.
Reading a body that experience teaches
A body holding water, a face that looks slightly swollen or tired: these are signs that an experienced eye tends to catch early, long before they show up as a number on a scale. Two or three days of proper recovery, sometimes off the diet entirely, can produce a result that looks like a breakthrough rather than a small adjustment. I've had clients message me after a week like that, genuinely surprised at how much changed from doing less, not more.
