Building Muscle After 40

What stays the same
The basics still work: steady progress in training, enough protein, and consistency. More sets is not the answer by default. I set your volume against your level and how well you are recovering, and the method takes about three hours a week, often less, so every set has to earn its place.
What actually shifts
The real change is recovery margin. In your twenties, a bad week of sleep or food barely registered. In my clients over 40, the same week shows up in performance, in how training feels and in how results progress. Building muscle after 40 is less about training differently and more about treating recovery as part of the programme, not an afterthought to it. I plan easier weeks into the programme in advance, with walks, a swim or something light in place of the gym, rather than waiting until you are run down.
How I decide when to add weight
I add weight only when the current weight has become steady: more reps than last time, in full control, and feeling easier. Adding load before that point is a guess, and a guess tends to show up as shaky form or a stall that gets blamed on the wrong thing. When adding weight stops being realistic, I slow the lift down instead. The same weight, lowered and lifted under control, becomes real work again, and your joints do not have to carry more load to get there.
When progress stalls
Training hard and improving are not the same thing. I track a few plain measures: the weight and reps on your main lifts, the total work in a session, and whether sessions are being finished in full. If the numbers are still moving, it is working, even when the mirror is slow. If they have stalled, I look at sleep, stress and food before I add a single set. In my experience, more training on top of poor recovery makes a stall worse, not better.
