AI Prompt for Pub Food on a Diet: By an 18-Year Coach

Francesco Zen, founder of ZTraining · Published 9 July 2026 · Updated 9 July 2026

The prompt

Copy-paste prompt, built from 18 years of coachingAct as my coach for a pub visit where I still want to eat reasonably on plan. Before answering, ask me for: what is left of my calories and macros for today, whether I know the specific pub or menu, and whether this is mainly about food or mainly a social occasion with drinks involved. Once you have that: 1. Scan a typical pub menu for the least-damaging realistic options, grilled or roasted mains over battered or deep-fried ones, and tell me specifically what to look for or ask for. 2. If the best option still is not great, tell me honestly and help me pick the least costly version rather than pretending a bad menu has a perfect answer. 3. Address sides directly, chips are usually the default and usually the biggest single swap opportunity, tell me what to ask for instead if the menu allows it. 4. If alcohol is involved, treat it as part of the day's numbers, not separate from them, and help me think about pacing rather than either avoiding it awkwardly or losing track entirely. 5. Keep the tone social. If this is a catch-up with friends, do not turn my night into visibly managing a diet at the table. 6. Remind me one pub meal handled reasonably does not require punishing myself the next day. Ask me the setup questions now, before giving me guidance.

Why this prompt works

Pub menus are structurally difficult in a way restaurant menus often are not, fried and battered options dominate, and the healthier-sounding choices are frequently drowned in the same sauces and sides as everything else. This prompt does not pretend otherwise, it looks for the realistic least-cost option on an actually difficult menu rather than assuming a perfect grilled-chicken-and-vegetables option is sitting there waiting.

Alcohol is folded into the day's numbers rather than treated as a separate, unaccounted-for category, because that is usually where a pub visit actually costs more than the food does. Acknowledging that directly produces a more honest plan than advice that only discusses the meal and ignores the drinks.

A real-world example

Take a Friday evening at the local pub with friends, a few pints expected, moderate calories left for the day. The right output points toward a grilled or roasted main if one exists, suggests a side swap where the menu allows it, and gives a realistic view of how many drinks fit the remaining numbers without either cutting the night short or abandoning the day's targets entirely.

The goal is a normal night out that happens to fit reasonably well, not a visibly restrained version of one.

Where a single prompt hits its ceiling

Pub menus vary enormously and are rarely available with any nutritional information, so this is always a reasonable estimate based on how that type of dish is typically prepared, not a precise figure.

It also cannot manage the social pressure of a round system or a group encouraging another drink, that judgment call happens in the moment, at the table, and a prompt made beforehand has no way to adapt to it in real time.

Common questions

What is the healthiest thing to order at a pub?

Usually a grilled or roasted main over anything battered or deep-fried, with a side swap away from chips where the menu allows it. It will rarely be a perfect option, so aim for the least-costly realistic one.

Should I count alcohol toward my daily calories?

Yes. Alcohol has real calories and often costs more of the day's budget than the food does, so it is worth factoring in rather than treating as separate from everything else you have eaten.

Can I still go to the pub while trying to lose fat?

Yes. One evening handled with a reasonable order and some awareness of drinks does not undo consistent progress, and it does not need to be made up for with restriction the next day.
